Calorie Needs for Weight Loss: A Personalized Guide

Question
George, I am 35yrs old 5'9" and 205lbs, I am not working out regularly but when I do, I lift weights and do cardio 5 days a week.  I was doing that for 3-4 weeks but I saw no progress.  I believe that my calorie intake is maybe too high.  What is the amount of calories I should get around each day?  Also I don't eat burgers, fast food, etc. I mostly eat peanut butter, chicken, red meat, lunchmeat on 12 grain breads, etc. but I'm concerned I am eating way too much.  Please help, I am getting older and its slipping away.

Answer
Hello Larry!

Thank you for your nutrition question.  If you are trying to lose weight you need to concentrate more on cardiovascular exercise then the weightlifting. This means spend more time on the treadmill or eliptical then in the weight room.  You can include some weightlifting however, do more repititions and less weight.
Your calorie intake should be about 2000 calories daily in order to lose 1-2lbs weekly which is a healthy goal. You can check out www.mypyramid.gov where you can create a healthy eating plan by entering your age, gender, and activity level.
I would also recommend checking out Ask the Nutritionists  by George Rapitis available at www.authourhouse.com, online, or at your favorite bookstore. It is filled with helpful weight loss tips for athletes.
