925 Sterling Silver Rings & Diamonds: What You Need to Know

The "925" marking on a ring indicates that the metal is sterling silver. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper).

The "925" marking tells you about the metal, NOT about the diamonds.

* It is possible to have real diamonds set in sterling silver. However, sterling silver is a relatively soft metal and not commonly used for high-value diamond jewelry.

* It is also possible to have fake diamonds (like cubic zirconia or moissanite) set in sterling silver. This is a much more common scenario.

Therefore, seeing "925" on a ring does not guarantee that the diamonds are real.

How to Determine if the Diamonds are Real:

1. Look for Other Markings: Look for other markings in the ring. If it's solid gold it should be marked 10K, 14K, 18K, etc. or platinum should be marked PT or Plat.

2. Professional Testing: The most reliable way to know if a diamond is real is to have it tested by a jeweler. They have tools and expertise to determine the authenticity of gemstones.

3. Visual Inspection:

* Loupe Examination: Use a jeweler's loupe (magnifying glass) to look for inclusions (imperfections) within the diamond. Real diamonds often have slight imperfections, while fake diamonds are often flawless.

* Sparkle: Real diamonds have a unique brilliance and fire (colored flashes of light). Fake diamonds tend to have a more dull or glassy appearance.

* Fog Test: Breathe on the stone. A real diamond will clear up almost instantly, while a fake diamond will fog up for a few seconds.

* Dot Test: Draw a dot on a piece of paper and place the stone over the dot. If you can see the dot clearly through the stone, it's likely a fake.

4. Consider the Price: Real diamonds are expensive. If the ring was very inexpensive, it's highly unlikely that the diamonds are real.

In short, don't assume the diamonds are real just because the ring is marked "925." Investigate further to be sure!
