African Ivory Jewelry Appraisal & Valuation - Expert Assistance
Questionhi, i hope you are doing well. I am at a bit of a loss. My father purchased African ivory jewelry for my mother when i was a child. I have had it for quite a few years now. I never wear it and have not interest in keeping it. I am from a small town in Louisiana and every jeweler i have talked to here says they are not qualified to appraise it. i need help. I have 3 pieces total. One is a "chain link" style bracelet made completely of ivory. It is unfortunately broken at the clasp. The next is a necklace of strung ivory that ends with a 2.5"x1.5" pendant, hand carved of an African animal scene. The third is a gold chain that holds a small intricately carved ivory egg that is gold inlaid at the top.
My question is, how do i go about getting this appraised so i can sell it?
AnswerThank you for your inquiry. Elephant ivory can be difficult to sell since it is a specialized collectible and due to US law are difficult to ship. There are many beautiful vintage jewelry items especially from the Victorian era and eary 1900's made from elephant ivory and it is still part of the collectors market. I have listed two sites below that may help you in valuing your pieces. Just click on or copy and paste them into your browser address field and hit enter. You might also want to have them checked by an expert to determine the authenticity of the pieces. Online auctions usually will not sell ivory but individual sites may. You might get someone to sell your pieces on consignment or browse the internet for elephant ivory sales for other possibilities. Hope this helps !
