HPV Transmission During Pregnancy: Risks and Concerns

Question
Hi I am 22 years old and I am pregnant with my 4th child.  LMP date oct 17.  Now my question is this.  Is it possible for a mother who has the HPV virus to pass it to her baby and it not show on any pap smears until now?  I will explain alittle.  My mother had HPV when she was pregnant with me.  Her doc said that the virus could pass to me and it was very likely.  My docs (who have contradicted themselves so many times) said that her doc was wrong and this was purely a std.  Well i did find on internet that it could be passed non sexually but it didn't elaborate.  I just had an abnormal pap 2 weeks ago and they said that was cause.  But I have only been with my husband and him with me.  NO signs what so ever but mom said that she passed it to me.  Is that possible?  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) can be a cause of genital warts, abnormal PAP smears, and can, in very rare instances, lead to clear cell carcinoma of the cervix. Although it can be transmitted through sexual contact as well as non-sexual contact, it is not transmitted to your baby.  Even if you have warts and the baby passes through these warts during delivery, the baby does not contract the virus.  When you get an abnormal PAP smear, we usually then perform a test ("reflex HPV testing") which identifies whether you have the HPV and, if so, which strain, exactly, you carry. There are some strains of HPV that are perfectly harmless and a few that would are suspicious and warrant further testing (colposcopic biopsy). If you had an abnoral PAP smear, your doctors will be able to adise you better afer all the tests are evaluated. However, it will not effect your pregnancy or your baby. Don't worry.
