Effexor and Pregnancy: Potential Effects & Considerations

My wife is 26 no children.

What are the effects of effexor on pregnancy. My wife is only taking one quarter of a pill each day. The whole pill is 75 mg.

Effexor (venlafaxine) is an antidepressant. Its mechanism of action is believed to be related to the potentiation of neurotransmitter activity in the brain. It is a potent inhibitor of neuronal reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, and a weak inhibitor of dopamine reuptake. No publications describing the use of venlafaxine during human pregnancy have been located. The FDA has not received any reports of adverse pregnancy outcomes involving the use of the drug during gestation. I would suggest that your wife speak to her obstetrician to see what his or her views are.
