Understanding Cesarean Sections: Reasons & Risks

Question
I just have a question since the news of the woman who refused a c-section and her baby died.
What exactly caused the baby to die? Would its life have been saved if she had had the procedure as advised?  I'm not asking anyone to judge her specifically; I just want to know what exactly causes a baby to die if you don't have a c-section when you're advised.

Thank you.

Melanie

Answer
There are many reasons why a cesarean section is performed: Placenta previa, premature separation of the placenta, non-reassuring fetal tracing, fetal distress, failure to progress in labor, secondary arrest of dilatation, arrest of descent, breech presentation, etc. I am not familiar with the case you are speaking about. Please give me the details and I can comment on them. Sometimes, if a cesarean is not performed in a timely fashion, the baby can become asphixiated and can become acidotic and die before it can be delivered.
