Preparing for Pregnancy: A Guide to Optimizing Health & Wellness

Question
What can I do now to prepare for a healthy pregnancy?  My husband and I plan to start trying for a baby towards the end of next year.  I've heard stories that you need to start purifying the body(eating certain healthy foods and avoid the junk) and that there may be some very good books that I should invest in and study. What's your advice?  By the way, I just turned 28.

Thanks

Answer
Well Angie- if you are REALLY serious about this, I would suggest a consult with a naturopathic physician. He/she is able to analyze your food plan and make very good suggestions about how to alter your diet. I would also suggest that you search out your local midwives- midwives do a superior job of monitoring a pregnant woman's health during pregnancy and keep you much healthier than a dr. Find some midwives, interview several and pick the one who makes you feel the most comfortable. One book I would recommend is called Ina May's Childbirth by  Ina May Gaskin. All the best- Cheri.
