Infant Crying During Bowel Movements: Causes & What's Normal

Question
Cheri - My son is on formula now.  When he was breastfeeding, his bowel movements were very frequent.  However, since going on formula he has only 1 bowel movement every other day.  It comes out soft, but not runny.  For the whole day before and up until the time he has a bowel movement, he screams and cry's as he is pushing to get it out.  The pain wakes him up from his sleep.  He appears to be in a lot of pain.  Is this normal?  He is 1 month old and is drinking Enfalac A+.

Thank you,
Karen

Answer
Karen- I URGE you to go back to breastfeeding- it will elimate the problem. I suspect your son is having quite a time digesting the formula, causing some bowel discomfort. He could also be allergic to the cow's milk and experiencing bowel cramps as a result. Get back to me- Cheri.
