Menopause Relief: Acupuncture, Calcium & Thyroid Concerns - Expert Advice

Question
I have three questions:
1) Which calcium type is best to take?  Calcium Citrate or Calcium Lactate

2) I am seeing an acupuncturist for hot flashes and menstrual cramping.  It seems to be working..the flashes have lessened.  Should I tell my ob-gyn that I also see an acupuncturist?  the ob-gyn wanted to give me estrogen-HRT, I'm not sure that is good for me.

3) My ob-gyn wanted me to get a thyroid test because I was having memory loss (couldn't remember my locker combination).  I did as she wanted.  Haven't heard the results yet.

ps - I am almost 52..and recently had the pap smear, mammogram..but I am thinking that I want to take the best of Chinese and American medicine.  I hate feeling sick and having hot severe hot flashes.

Answer
We usually suggest any calcium tablet that will deliver 1500mg of calcium/day.  I do not know whether acupuncture will help with vasomotor symptoms of menopause (flashes, flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness), but I do know that estrogen therapy will help and is safe, as long as you monitor your health by yearly mammographys. There is really nothing else that will stop these symptoms, other than estrogen therapy. Certainly, acupuncture will not hurt, but I would let your gynecologist know what you are doing. Thyroid testing is a good start if you are having problems with cognition. We all forget locker combinations. The time to worry is when you forget what the function of a lock is.
