Pregnancy Risks at 43 with Hepatitis C & Substance Use History: Seeking Medical Advice

Question
Dear Doctor,

I am in a hugh situation. I am 43 year old black women with hepatitis C and I just found out that I am pregnant. I am unmarried. I have 3 older children the youngest being 11 years old. I am a recovering drug addict. My drug of choice was crack cocaine. I have been clean of alcholol and drugs for 3 years. My baby's father wants me to have this child because he is the same age as I and has never had any children. I do not want to have anymore kids. Am I in a huge risk factor? Are the chances of this child being retarted high? Am I at risk of death during child birth?  How can I explain this situation to him? Please help me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Gwen Lampkin

Answer
Hello,
This is a very tough situation that really needs to be discussed in person with a Dr. that can examine you.
Being 43 certainly puts you at some greater risk, I really would not think death is high on that list.  More on the line of Down Syndrome in the child, high blood pressure for you and an increase risk of diabetes.
The Hep C really needs to be addressed since I am not able to talk to you about that. (outside of my expertise)
Please see a Dr. A.S.A.P.  I wish you luck.
