Pelvic Exams After Hysterectomy: Are They Still Necessary?
QuestionI am 54 amd had a hysterectomy at the age of 40 because of fibroids. I still have my ovaries. I have severe arthritis and as a result have not been sexually active for a long time. Since I have been so crippled up and find it hard to get around my doctor has never suggested a pelvic exam. I am not anxious to be examined if there is no need to do so. Your opinion would be much appreciated Thanks
AnswerThe new guidelines of ACOG (The American College of ObGyn) state that, you no longer need to have a PAP smear after a hysterectomy. However, you do need a pelvic exam to assess your ovaries and examine your vagina and vulva. It is also advisable to have an annual mammography done.
