Understanding High bHCG & Pregnancy Levels After Molar Pregnancy

Question
I am 34 years old, with one child (age 2 - normal pregnancy), and my LMP was Aug. 5, 2005.  I had a partial molar pregnancy due to triploidy that ended after 11 weeks in Nov. 2004.  My bHCG levels were monitored for 6 months after, and I was declared fine.

For this newest pregnancy, I went for ultrasound at 6 wks and Dr. saw gestational sac, yolk sac, and fetal pole, but no heartbeat (he said may be a little early and US equipment he used may not be able to see it yet either).  That same day, my bHCG level was measured at 87,000 and my PG level at 30.3.  With such high bHCG and no heartbeat, I feel something is probably off, but Dr. won't confirm until after another ultrasound at 8 wks.  He said high bHCG could indicate another molar pregnancy (but with my partial molar preg. bHCG always was low?).  A complete mole would have high bHCG, but I'm assuming it wouldn't be a complete mole because the fetal pole was detected.

Is it possible to have a viable pregnancy with these stats?  Or are the odds stacked against me?

Thanks,

Angela

Answer
Although your risk for another molar pregnancy is higher than the general population merely because you had one in the past, the fact that they saw a fetal pole is encouraging and you should not give up hope. Repeat the sonogram in one week. If there still is no fetal pole, you may have a "missed abortion". It does not sound like a molar pregnancy or even a partial mole. However, you should still have a D&C and check. If this is turns out to be a viable normal pregnancy, I would try to remember that, when you deliver the baby, you should still have the placenta sent to pathology for examination, due to your previous history. Good luck.
