IUD Removal & Early Pregnancy: Risks and Concerns

Question
I am 34 years old.  I have 3 children, and my last period was around 8/22/05.  I had an IUD in for about 18 months, then took a pregnancy test yesterday (OK, took TWO!), and they were positive.  Went to doctor today and he confirmed it.  It's very early on in the pregnancy, so we took out the IUD and are hoping that baby will be ok, but I realize there is a 50/50 chance that I could miscarry.  I failed to ask him the following, though:  If I DO miscarry, will that typically be right away (like in the first 24-48 hours)?  And:  I'm having some very faint spotting already (very pale pink).  Is that common right after IUD removal, or should I be concerned that I could be miscarrying already (the IUD was removed just a couple of hours ago)?

Please advise.  Thanks!

Answer
Most of the time, when we remove an IUD in a pregnant woman, she does not miscarry (although it is, indeed, possible). There is no way to predict whether you will miscarry or how long after the IUD is removed can you miscarry. Faint spotting at youor stage of pregnancy is common and does not mean that you will miscarry either. The bleeding may be merely from the "bed" of the IUD due to irritation as it was removed. It is definitely recommended to remove an IUD when we realize that you are pregnant. Most of the time, you will do well. If you start to have havy bleeding along with cramps, call your doctor.
