I am 43, 2 children (easily concieved!) , and my last period was 2/27/06. Over the last year there have been a few times where I had light spotting of brownish blood right after sex, but it was always right before my period was due. So I didn't pay much attention. However, during the last 2 cycles I have had red spotting on day 21 of my cycle , also right after sex. I do not have bleeding after sex all the time, it seems to be only during the last week of my cycle. I just had a pap smear that was negative, as they always are. My doctor suggests a sonogram to look for uterine polyps. Is there anything else I should consider ?
Answer -
I wold also suggest a sonogram. Often postcoital bleeding can be caused by uterine polyps or fibroids. Sometimes, bleeding can occur with vigorous sexual activity (small scratches, lacerations, etc). You could also have some hormonal imbalance, causing the bleeding.
Thank you for your response. My sonogran showed no polyps or any other physical cause for the bleeding. My ovaries looked fine as well. I continue to have postcoital bleeding only in the few days before my period. Intercourse at other times doesn't seem to cause it. What would you suggest next?
AnswerTry to have an exam while you are having the postcoital bleedng. If there is any scratch or laceration in the vagina, it will be seen in a speculum exam. If it is due to hormonal imbalance, the doctor may be able to ascertain that. Are you sure that the bleeding is coming from the vagina? Sometimes, due to pressure on the trigone of the bladder during sex, some bleeding can be coming from the bladder (urethra). Try having sex in the female-superior position (with the male lying down). This changes the angle of the penis inside of the vagina.
