Understanding Luteal Phase Defect: Symptoms, Causes & Impact on Fertility

Question
Hi Dr. Rappaport,
My name is Amie, I just turned 24, I have 1 live child, I had a miscarriage on 2/06/06, and today is the 1st day of my period.
The cycle before I got pregnant, my luteal phase was only 10 days, but I didn't think much of it. Then I got pregnant only to lose the baby at 6wks.  My first post-m/c cycle I didn't ovulate until CD22(but I expected that), but my luteal phase was only 8 days long. Now my 2nd post-m/c cycle I ovulated on CD16 (which is normal for me), and my luteal phase was only 9 days long.  Does this sound like a luteal phase defect that I need to contact my Dr. about? That is caused by a decrease in prigesterone, correct? And, if this is my problem, could that be the reason for the miscarriage? Or, do I need to wait and see what happens? Before we started trying to concieve I had the Mirea IUS. Could having that be the reason for this?
I am very confused by this, and I really just want to know what is going on with my body.  It feels like my body isn't even giving me a chance to get pregnant.
Thank you for all of your help!
Amie

Answer
When was the first day of your period (when you miscarried) When you said that you ovulated on cycle day 22. If you said that the luteal phase was only 8 days, that means that you got your period on cycle day #29 (when it should have been cycle day 35). Ovulation usually occurs 14 days prior to your next period. How did you know when you ovulated?  If the luteal phase is less than 14 days, you probably have a decrease in progesterone and should be started on Progesterone supplentation. It is not caused by  Mirena IUD. We really do not know why a miscarriage takes place. I would discuss it with your doctor to see if and when you ovulated and if you had a short luteal phase.
