QuestionJust a few questions about bathing newborn babies
When should they have their first bath?
How many baths a week should they have?
Can they have a bath in a tub staright away or should they be having sponge baths?
How hot should the bath be?
Why do you need to put in cool water first?
When should they have a bath before or after a feed?
How long should you wait before taking a newborn outside?
Thankyouxx
AnswerHi Gemma,
Congratulations on your new baby ;) Giving a first bath is an exciting event. Wait until the umbilical cord stub falls off- about a week or two.
Until that time, you will only do sponge baths. Put baby on a soft towel, moisten a wash cloth with warm water- not hot.
begin with the face and gently wipe each body part.
explain each part aloud (now I'm cleaning your nose) to introduce baby to him/herself and sooth with your voice.
When it is time for a tub bath,
fill a baby bath with warm water-not more than 115/120 degrees
Hold baby at ALL times!
Have with you a baby shampoo, a cup, soft towel, a diaper, and a wash cloth. If it is cool out, also have clothes handy.
Make sure you talk to your baby the entire time, explaining that 'this is water', 'it is warm and wet', 'look at the bubbles', etc...
Use a pea size amount of shampoo (put into your hand first) and gently make a lather on baby's head. Tilt the head back slightly and rinse with water by using the cup until the soapy water comes out.
Take baby out slowly and place him/her on a towel. Wrap up baby and gently dry. Dress when your baby is dry.
A baby can go outside right after birth. Be cautious of the temperature and the sun. Try to keep baby shaded from sun and if it is cold, properly dress for the weather.
It is best to bathe *before* mealtimes, but waiting for long after feeding is not necessary because newborns eat so often.
Bathing is necessary about every 3 days or so at this age.
Have fun and remember to relax and enjoy this important milestone!
