Castor Oil for Induction: Risks, Benefits & What to Expect
QuestionI am 41 weeks pregnant with my first pregnancy. My induction is scheduled for this Monday and I was wondering if you recommend castor oil?
AnswerDear Maisa,
Castor oil can provide good results if you are already having some labor contractions. It is thought to work by causing spasms in the intestines, which surround the uterus toward the end of pregnancy. These spasms then cause the uterus to cramp, which MIGHT result in labor.
You can take 1-4 ounces of castor oil mixed with 6 ounces of orange juice to cut its oiliness (much better than water). You'll want to drink it fairly quickly because it does not have a pleasant taste. Some doctors suggest taking a single dose, while others suggest repeated doses depending on your response. Remember that castor oil usually will cause your bowels to empty within about three hours, so stay near a bathroom! If you do go into labor, remember to let the nurses at the hospital know that you have had castor oil - when and how much.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
