Navigating Waterbirth Restrictions with an HMO

Question
Hi Vicki, I am about to have my 5th baby in March and was told that my insurance (which is new to us - an HMO)doesn't do waterbirths, I can have a midwife, but no waterbirth.  Well, my problem is that I've had all my kids in water and history shows that once I get into the water - BAM - the baby comes!  I really, really can't imagine not having a waterbirth but it seems like I don't have a choice.  We certainly don't have the money to pay privately.  Do you have any advice at all?  Thanks so much!

Answer
Hello,
I have to say, I have never heard of the insurance company dictating a water birth.  What if the baby happened to come out there?  Those things happen all the time, as it sounds like you know!

Where does your midwife deliver? Does she have any experience with this insurance company?  I think I would challenge the insurance company.  Are they suggesting you are be restricted from using hydrotherapy as a viable option to pain relief during labor?  How will they monitor this?  What other restrictions do they require?

I would be very interested in what you find out!

I hope you have a good, fast labor!

Vicki
