Fertility at 44: Understanding Your Chances & Options

Question
QUESTION: Hi there!
I was wondering if since my estradiol levels reads 21 upon a recent blood test I am wondering what are my chances for getting pregnant?
I have been on 5 cycles of clomid and had 3 IUI completed without any success. How much longer can I be on Clomid and what else can I do to increase my chances of concieving another child?
Please help me with any information you can provide! We, my husband and I would really like to have another child.

Thank you so much,
Angie

ANSWER: Hello,

Clomid is usually not recomended for more than 6 cycles in a row.  Given your age, you would have higher success rates with IVF, which would give you approximately a 25 to 30% chance, versus the lower 15% chance with IUI.  Rates vary depending on the clinic you choose.  Good luck.

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your response and information. Can I ask you though, why is it not recommended that you not take more than 6 cycles of Clomid?
And unfortunately, given my estradiol level of 21 - my doctor informed me that if IVF is an option, it wouldn't be a good recommendation. Can I also ask you what can be done to help my estradiol level or if anything else can be done to help me get pregnant - - if at all?
Please have some form of good news for me as I am desperately trying to have just one more child.
Thank you,
Angie

Answer
Hello,

Usually if Clomid doesn't work within the first 6 cycles, it is not going to work.  The success rate with Clomid is not that high, as it is intended to work for people who don't ovulate.  It sounds like your issue is low estradiol which I'm not sure if that can be corrected with medication.  You should consult your reproductive specialist who can advise you whether this can be corrected in your situation and where to proceed.
