Risk of HIV Transmission After Medical Imaging: A Doctor's Perspective

Question
hello doctor,
I  m 29 years old..i m on my second cycle of clomid..my
follicles measured 1.5mm,1.6mm and 1.1mm on CD16..The
problem is when i went to the lab to get the scanning done,i
removed my underwear and hung it in the hook provided inn
the room..since then, i m kinda disturbed..i m keeping on
thinking what if the women who went inside was a HIV
Positive and what if her vaginal fluid/discharge  had stuck
on the hook or on the wall when she hung her innerwear
andits still wet and  what if i put my innerwear on the same
place and then i wore it..would i get infected like  this???
..there was no time gap between her and me...she came out
and i went inside.. i dont knw whether to try this time..i
dont want to take risk of my husband's health..i m planning
wait for 3 months and get a test done .please
advise,doctor...

Answer
Hello Little Flower from India,

Theorically you could possibly contract HIV or another infectious disease from someone elses contaminated underwear, especially if they are placed in the same place.  The virus will live in fluid, as long as it does not dry out, and can be transmitted. I find that such a thing is being done as quite disturbing.  That is a very unsanitary practice. An intimate piece of clothing such as underwear should never be exposed to a public area such as a clothes hook.  It should be folded and put away within your clothes or in a bag.  I would think, however, the chances of your contracting HIV or any other disease from this episode would be low.
