Can a Diabetic Man Father a Child? Fertility & Diabetes

Dear TMM,MD,PhD:

Is it possible for a diabetic male, that is 57 years old to father a child? I always thought that diabeties causes men or wormen to be sterle or to become sterile.

There is no reason why a 57 yo diabetic male should not be able to father child provide he can maintain an erection and has an appropriate sperm count to foster conception.

If you have been trying to conceive for a year without success, it is reasonable to pursue an infertility workup if this is what you desire.
