QuestionI had always heard, although I never knew why, that when someone has a urinary tract infection they should refrain from drinking soft drinks(colas and such)and instead drink water &/or cranberry juice. Recently, I've been told that there was no documented medical rationalization for that. Do you know the answer or where I could find such documentation regarding soft drinks vs. water during UTI's?
Thanks for help.

AnswerYou are right, there is no evidence that water or soft drinks cause, contribute, prevent, help or have any effect on urinary tract infections. Cranberry juice is mildly acidic and may inhibit (slow) growth of bacteria, so with a very mild urinary tract infection, drinking a lot of cranberry juice could cure it, but it has to be a mild infection. You should increase fluids in general though, if you have a urinary tract infection.
Hope this helps....
