Questionfluid from my knee is being tested now (probably as i write this) for uric acid crystals and i've had some major pain in my big toe. so i won't be surprised with the diagnosis.
I don't know if you can answer this question, but a new study just came out about the preventative effects of milk and dairy products on gout attacks. I have a couple of questions for you. one, am i gonna have to see a rhumatologist? two, since i'm also lactose intolerant, does "lactaid" fall into the category of a preventative dairy product?
if you cannot answer these questions, please direct it to some one who might be able to help me. i'm only 32 years old.
AnswerLets assume you test positive for uric acid crystals, making the diagnosis of acute gouty arthritis accurate. Then, no, you won't have to see a rheumatologist. This can be easily treated by any doctor. I would treat your episode of arthritis and when it is gone, would start you on Allopurinol (Zyloprim) and keep you on it to prevent further episodes. I don't catch the relationship with dairy products, but since you are lactose intolerant, it isn't really a relevant issue. Lactaid works pretty good, but I would recommend avoiding dairy products.
Hope this helps...
