Questioncan you give me information on the drug chantix?
AnswerHi Heather!
First of all, if this information is for you, best wishes in kicking the habit!
Chantix is a drug that acts at the sites of the brain that are affected by nicotine. It simulates the same effect that nicotine does, and so you have reduced withdrawal symptoms. If you smoke while taking Chantix, it also blocks nicotine from entering the brain areas that like the effect. That way, you don't get that "feeling of reward" from smoking.
In the studies I have read, Chantix has about a 44% success rate, as opposed to 17% with a placebo. It seems to have a better success rate than Zyban, the other well known anti-smoking medication.
The usual course of Chantix is 12 weeks, but many doctors put their patients on for 24 weeks to really improve chances for success.
The major side effects are nausea, vomiting, gas, insomnia and headaches.
Be sure and discuss with your physician whether this is the right medication for you, or whoever is thinking about taking it.
Best wishes to you, Heather. I hope this answered your question. If it didn't, please don't hesitate to let me know, and I will try and be more complete.
