QuestionHi
I am 48,and in good health.I have had two recent full medicals, one work related and one for insurance.Apart from losing my eyesight I am A-OK.
I am 5'7" and weigh 230 pounds.
That sounds like a lot of weight on a small frame, but I have always been into sports and working out so I am fairly muscular.
Part of the reason I exercise is to keep the size of my belly in check.
I have come to the conclusion that my protruberant abdomen is genetic.
I am a light eater and non alcohol drinker, but you would think I have a beer gut at first glance. In fact my ribs stick out a bit!
I guess I have concluded that I cant fight genetics and I should concentrate on staying healthy.
I am concerned however as my father and his two brothers, who both had this condition, passed away, very suddenly, in their forties. One from cancer, two from heart disease. They all had clean bills of health previously, but within months got sick and were gone.
Although they werent 'health nuts' like me,they had a moderate lifestyle.
Am I doomed to be like them? Is there anything else I can do to get my abdomen down? I have tried situps, crunches, running(I run for 30 minutes every day) and all kinds of herbal supplements.
My latest 'kick' is resveratrol.Seems to be a cure all and fountain of youth, but I am skeptical.
Thanks for your thoughts!
AnswerBud,
Actually there are certain diseases that will increase your risk if you have family members (+) for them as well. Heart disease and cancer can "run in the family". Would suggest keeping up your healthy lifestyle and get checked often. Lipid panels, homocysteine, CRP, Cancer markers (CEA and LASA) may be helpful as well as cancer screening tests (PSA, etc.)
As far as your genetics related to body habitus... you may be stuck with the physique you have if it runs in the family.
Resveratrol has its place... but drinking a couple of glasses of wine a day... does not give you enough. To get the full benefits you would need to supplement via capsules. Read my blog as there are a couple of entries on Res listed in there (see link below).
One thing I would recommend is reading my book on Adaptogen herbs and drink Jiaogulan tea and consider Rhodiola as supplements. Be glad to share a power point presentation with you if you give me your e-mail address (request it from jpsaleeby@aol.com).
Book: "Wonder Herbs: A guide to three Adaptogens" (Xlibris, 2006)
Rhodiola rosea and Jiaogulan are both found to reduce weight and have other positive cancer reducing and coronary disease reducing properties.
