Placenta Degradation: Symptoms & What to Expect at 38-42 Weeks

Question
If my health care provider does not do an ultrasound, what are some signs that I can look for that my placenta may be degrading?.............I am told I am 38 weeks, but measuring at 42 weeks

Answer
Jill,

Just because you're measuring 42 weeks does not mean that you're overdue or that your placenta is degrading.  Measuring large can be due to many factors, including the baby's size, position, and station in your uterus.

An ultrasound will also not give a definitive answer on whether a placenta is degrading or by how much.  Some calcification may be seen which indicates that the placenta may be aging, but this does not give a clear indication of whether the baby is in distress.

For you, the most important factor will be to monitor your baby's movements to ensure they remain similar to its current pattern.  If you feel that the baby's movement is greatly reduced or is just not moving for longer stretches and this does not improve if you lie down and drink a glass of juice, then you may want to call your care provider.  Less movement can be an indication that the baby is in distress or can be a normal progression as the baby runs out of room.

The bottom line is that if you ever have concerns about your or your baby's health, then contact your care provider to discuss your concerns.

Best,
Catherine
