Thank you for your answer, do you happen to know of any articles or things I can read about Fine needle Biopsys and this inflammation you mentioned , the wrong results (like Atypical) when in accuality it wasn't when I had the Biopsy on my Breast, I was trying to look this info up on Google, but couldnt really find anything with this particular information. Thanks so much!  I had no idea Fine Needle Biopsys could damage things ! ------------------------

I had a fine needle aspiration done and I guess some Atypical cells were found, so they sent me to have this small breast nodule removed, and from what I was told, there was no Atypical cells in what was removed.  HOw can this be?  Is this common?  The Surgeon mentioned something about the Needle aspiration could have caused some  inflammation, and that could have done it.  I guess I just don't understand.    How could the needle catch some Atypical cells but not the Excisional biopsy?   Thanks

Dear Renee,   Fine needle biopsy is NOT always an accurate way to diagnose anything....  Infact, often the FNA will cause more damage to the suspected area and distort the actual excisional biopsy...  I never opt for a FNA....  I just tell my doctors/surgeons, since you found something, just go in and cut it out and then do your biospy....

Atypical FNA has a 50-50 chance of being right or wrong...  This is because it MUST be done by a radiologist who knows what he/she is actually doing, getting enough sample to be tested, and a pathology lab that knows if there is enough sample and how to accurately make a diagnosis....    Often, with FNA, the main cause for positive results is do to not enough sample taken to accurately perform a correct diagnosis....

Also FNA will cause bruising, inflammation/infection etc...
In your case I would have to assume that there was NOT an adequate sample to even be correctly biopsied....

Thank you,   karen
