Breast Cancer Treatment: Post-Lumpectomy & Radiotherapy - Seeking Information
QuestionHi. I'm 50y.o. had RB lumpectomy - removed 25x15x10mm - tumour type invasive ductal carcinoma NOS, Grade II but a 3 mm area shows Grade III tumour with no tubules and many mitoses. Other similar foci are present at the periphery of the tumour elsewhere.
ER+ 2/3, PR+ 3/3, HER2(DAKO)PATCHY - negative to 1+, HER2 SISH result: negative. I have just finished 4 chemo treatments - 3 weeks apart, am about to start radiotherapy - 25 treatments (some may be 2 in the one day 6 hrs apart - concerned about safety?) Then OC recommends Hormone Therapy. I was pre-menopausal on diagnosis, but once on chemo only 1 period at start and none since. Saw on internet if women pre-menopausal prior to chemo who went into post menopausal status afterwards, faired just as well as women who were put on Tamoxifen in terms of survival and non-recurrence because without this monthly surge of estrogen anymore that don't need to take hormone pills. I am concerned about the many side-effects. What do you believe? Thanks.
AnswerI believe that both your chemotherapy AND your radiation therapy as described ARE NECESSARY! I also believe that hormonal therapy in your case is a GOOD IDEA and NECESSARY! The harsh facts are that your primary problem is your cancer not so much any side effects! So top priority must be put on your treatment! Good luck!
