This is my situation: I just recently got married and went on my honeymoon.  I was suppose to start my inactive pills on Friday of our HM.  Instead, I continued to take active pills to finish the and began my inactive pills on Monday. My question is did I mess up my schedule because my new start date is Monday instead of Friday? and I am I at risk of getting pregnant (my husband and I have been using a condom for the last two weeks, because I have been paranoid, but we are anxious to not have to use it:)

Hi Kelly. Let me make sure I have this right, and if not feel free to let me know.

You were supposed to start your inactive pills on a Friday, but instead you took an active pill on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and began inactive pills on Monday, correct?

What kind of active pills did you take? Were they Week One active, Week 2 active or Week 3 active? Did they come from a fresh pack, and if so will you have a complete pack to start next cycle? Also, was it because you thought you needed extra protection against pregnancy, or was it to postpone your monthly period? And how long ago was this?

All of these things would help me to answer your questions. If you could help me with that info, I think I may be able to help you get answers. Let me know when you can.

Thanks, Andrea

Yes, your correct on the days that I continued to take the active pills.  I am on Yasmin birth control and I was on my 3rd week of active pills while on my honeymoon.  When I ran out of those on Friday of the honeymoon, I took yasmin pills that I had left over from a previous pack on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  On Monday, I began the inactive pills that I was suppose to start the previous Friday.  After my week of inactive pills, I started a new pack like normal.  I did this to postpone my period while I was on my honeymoon.  My honeymoon was March 5-11.  March 12- 19 was the week I was on the inacvtive pills and March 20-present I am currently the new pack of yasmin. I hope all of this gives you the information that you need, thank you so much for your help.  Let me know if there are anymore details you need inorder to answer my question. Thanks:)

Answer
Thanks for getting back to me. Basically, you got three extra days of hormones, which could have thrown off your cycle by 3 days. Doesnt sound like much to be concerned about to me, HOWEVER, when it comes to Birth Control, it is essential they be taken just as directed. Since youve started the new pack without missing any pills, and you didnt mention anything unusual, such as a missed or short period, your risk should be small.

But remeber, everyones body acts diffrently, and I think youve done the right thing by following up with condoms. My suggestion would be to continue the month with a back up method, just like youve been doing, and finish the pack off as normal, just to be safe. Your period should adjust accordingly. If it doesn't, you may want to discuss with your Dr. about whether or not to continue like you are, or skip a month and start over, catching your cycle back up to normal. Inconvient I know, but better safe than sorry.

Good Luck to you, and Thanks. Hope that helped answer your question, and if not let me know and I will certainly look into it further and pass on anything I learned.
