Natural Family Planning: Risks, Effectiveness & Best Practices

Question
Thank you for your response. I used to use natural family planning all the time until someone told me it was the riskiest thing to do because you could never guess when you are ovulating.  Is this true?  I never had a problem while I was using that method.  I would just be EXTRA careful anywhere from 12-16 days after my period would begin.. Is this the right way to do it?

-----Question-----
I have been on Mircette BC for almost 5 years.  I recently started to get really
bad headaches and breakthrough bleeding about 4 days after my regular
period.  My gynocologist switched me to a new BC Microgestin.  She said it
was probably time to change and that teh breakthrough bleeding should
stop.  I am now on my first pack of Microgestin.  I finished my period 1 week
ago and took my first pill on Thursday.  Today.. Tuesday... I started
breakthrough bleeding again.  What is going on with me?
-----Answer-----
Hi Kristi,
Thanks for your question. I'm not a medical doctor and I really urge you to ask your gynecologist. Or maybe you could get a 2nd opinion if you're not happy with your first gynecologist. I don't recommend the pill because of this and other side effects and risks. Perhaps you could consider another method. I only recommend non-hormonal birth control methods such as Natural Family planning, condoms and of course, abstinence. Don't be too worried about the breakthrough bleeding but check it out and perhaps consider another method. Please email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com and let me know what happens.
Sincerely,
Diane Cheryl

Answer
Hi Kristi,
Natural Family Planning is not guaranteed to prevent pregnancy. I'm not sure of the statistics but if you go back to http://www.allexperts.com and find birth control and find Ramona, you can ask her. She's the expert for Natural Family Planning. Would it be a problem if you did get pregnant at this time? I would love to talk to you more if you email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com
Thanks.
