Birth Control & Ovarian Cysts: A Patient's Concern

Question
Hello!  I am currently am and  have been for several years, taking Orthro Tri
Cyclin Lo.  Six months ago I developed a very painful complex cyst on my
right ovary .  It eventually burst on its own, but I am having similar symptoms
and suspect I have another cyst again in my right ovary. I have an
appointment later this week to find out for sure.

I have done some research and it all suggests that birth control can help to
prevent and/or shrink cysts.  My question is why am I getting cysts if I am
faithfully taking my birth control?  Shouldn't it be preventing me from
ovulating?  Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated and thank
you so much for your time!

Best,
Amy

Answer
Hi Amy,
You are correct that the pill will reduce the incidence of ovarian cysts.  These are what are called functional cysts, related to the functioning of the ovary.  Since yours was a complex cyst rather than a simple one, and since it may have come back, it's possible that it's actually a type of tumor cyst.  Another ultrasound will help to figure it out.  It's possible that you'll need surgery to remove it.
