Heavy & Prolonged Periods After IUD: Causes & Solutions
Questioni am 27 years old and have two kids. i use a hormonal IUD for birth control and am married. i have used a IUD for 3 years the first two years i used a copper IUD and had prolonged menses that lasted usually 9 to 20 days. i changed about a year ago on the advice of my doctor to try and help the situation have been doing better with the hormonal IUD until last month i started my period early on the 6th of November and lasted until the 29th of November it was very heavy having to change my pad or tampon every other hour using a super plus tampon. then on the 4th of December started my period again and is still very heavy and painful now. i have been to the doctors before and did a ultra sound and found nothing that could explain it do you have any advise i live in a very small town not really an option to try and find another doctor i just need some relief and nothing as of yet has worked. Thank you
AnswerMy advice is to have the Mirena removed. Sometimes they work well for a long time, and then there are problems, such as yours. Since your ultrasound and exam didn't show anything, it's very hard to know exactly why you're having the bleeding and pain. Most likely it will all resolve when the IUD is removed. Give it a month or two after you're feeling well, and you can probably have another one inserted if you wish. Best wishes.
