RU-486 & Misoprostol Use: Legality and Procedure Concerns

Question
Hi,
I took Mifiprex and Misoprostol at a place called Family Planning Associates another Planned Parenthood type of place that operates in a few states anyway I know that this pill combo is offered at FPA and Planned Parenthood clinics as well are they breaking the law as Cytotec (Misoprostol) is against giving it for abortion but for ulcers. How are they getting away with this are is it some way legal. I have a NEG pregnancy test now after taking the combo but have retained products of conception and now have to take another set. Was to squeamish to do the aspiration.

Answer
Hello, Valerie,

It isn't "against the law" to use Cytotec for abortion (mostly because the law currently doesn't really protect women anyway), but it IS off label, and what the manufacturer is basically saying is that it doesn't want the legal liability if something goes wrong. Personally, I consider it malpractice for anyone to give Cytotec to a pregnant woman.

As for aspiration or D&C, it's not clear to me it wouldn't be a better choice under the circumstances. The Cytotec CAN kill you very quickly. Not saying the D&C can't, too, but if you go to a competent doctor (please not to the place where you got these pills), it might be safer. Here's how Cytotec kills. 1. it can cause toxic shock syndrome. The victim has only hours to live 2. it can cause hemorrhage and a woman can bleed to death. 3. it can cause the uterus to rupture.

Try to find a doctor who really thinks of you as his patient and not just a piece of meat, or an abortion fee. Ask around a little bit. You can ask the people at a local organization that helps pregnant women. The doctors affiliated with them won't like to have to finish things off, but they're a lot more trustworthy.

Please take care of yourself. I hope everything will turn out for you. After all, anything that was retained is a possible source of infection, and that's dangerous, too. Let me know how you do.
