Massage Therapy for Crohn's Disease: Techniques & Considerations

Question
I have a client with Crohns diease would it be best to keep the massage Swedish and superfical or is it ok to include myofascial and DST techniques?

Answer
Greetings Micaela. Crohn's disease ia a condition where the intestines (usually the lower, but it can affect the entire digestive tract) are inflamed, possibly by the immune system. Since it is immune related, you can work deep on them, but it is probably best to do it when the condition is quiet. You will probably only have a chance to work on them when it is not active, since they might not feel like being touched during an episode. Massage is thought to strengthen and support the immune system, something we wouldn't necessarily want to do with massage, but as the condition is pretty chronic and deep, I really don't think that a massage would do any harm.

I do have a friend who has it, and I have done some light massage during a flare up, and she felt it helped. She also occasionally uses heat or cold (whichever feels best at the time) to ease pain. This could be used in a massage, as the client lies on their back.

I hope this helps some, Micaela. Please feel free to write with any other questions. Also feel free to rate me on AllExperts, as both positive and constructive feedback helps me learn to help others better.

Sincerely,
Christopher Hall
