QuestionI am currently studying massage therapy and in my pathology class I am doing a report of cushing's disease/syndrome. I know that massage decreases cortisol and therefore is good therapy, I just wonder if there would be a problem if there is an actual pituitary, adrenal, or ectopic tumor what the effect massage would have on these issues. I am interested in hearing about any and every modality you have knowledge about.
AnswerHi Samantha
Great question!
In class when we have discussions about SOAP notes it becomes a challenge assessing pre existing pathological conditions and deciding what would be beneficial and when it becomes a contraindication.
Academically speaking tumors especially questionable ones fall under the category of contraindications. Unless we are under the care and direction of an MD would I even begin a therapy plan with a client with that condition. So to answer the question in my opinion yes it's a problem that quickly escalates beyond the scope of practice of any LMT.
Also in any pathological condition the most accurate way is case by case. Beginning with exploring all aspects of the clients health history. Otherwise it's a conversation that will vary rightfully so, depending on the therapist and their experiences.
Personally I would approach clients with energy therapies like Reiki, Polarity therapy or Access. These are non-obtrusive laying of hand techniques that are so gentle and relaxing that it will benefit anyone. For five years I worked with cancer patients in Boston, MA and experienced amazing results when using these modalities.
Wow all of my modalities! Maybe I could write a book!
To your success,
