How to Give a Deep Tissue Massage to Your Active Boyfriend

Question
Hi Mikey. I'm currently in a relationship with a very active guy. He works out regularly, but also suffers from stress built up in his muscles and joints from day to day wear. He's also a single dad so he is always on the move. I give him massages when I can, but I just don't seem to do enough. Plus he has said it doesn't feel "Deep". I am currently about to go into school for this, since health is something I'm into and he says I give good massages. But I am at a loss on what to do in the meantime for him. I don't know how to give deep tissue or swedish massages, and I have a difficult time getting around his bones; he's very boney. I enjoy giving him massages because not only is it a bonding moment for he and I, but I like making him feel better. And also neither one of us want him to pay for a professional massage. And if I can provide one for him, even better. Can you help?

Answer
Hi there Courtney!

I think it's great that you want to help your boyfriend, and that you have an interest in health and massage, best wishes with that!  Until you can get formal training, I would suggest either buying a book or even better a DVD of basic massage techniques, especially couple's massage or something similar.  I would not worry about trying to work "deep" yet, as the deeper you go the more training you need to make sure you stay safe.   In the mean time, practice on your man, try using your body weight to add pressure (stand or kneel over him and let your weight rest on your hands as you work, but be careful not to hurt your back or wrists - if they feel strained, change position).  Try not to press hard on the boney bits! :D   Otherwise, check with your local massage school to see if they have a student clinic - you both may be able to get a very good massage with professional supervision for a great discount - sometimes even free!

Best Wishes!
