Understanding Contraindications for Indian Head Massage: A Guide

Question
Hi,
I have recently done a short course in Indian Head Massage and I am currently practicing on friends and family. I have a questionnaire I ask them to fill in regarding contraindications, however I would like to know more about the reasons for some of these please?
Such diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, heart conditions, rheumatism and arthritis, nervous dysfunctions?
Thank you
Jane

Answer
Hello Jane,

I am not certified or trained in Indian Head Massage, though I believe I can still answer some of your question.  The answer may simply not apply to you only doing head massage, so I suggest you ask an instructor or do research online to see if it does indeed apply.

With full-body massage, the circulatory system may be stimulated and even temporarily stressed - blood pressure and spike and crash, as well as blood sugar.  If a client has issues that are not under control, this can cause harm or even just feel unpleasant (which is not what you want, right?).  Obviously you don't want to apply heavy pressure to an area that is arthritic as it would cause pain and possibly increase the already present inflammation.  I don't know that any of this will be an issue in a head massage only, though it is wise to ask client's about their health history in general just in case it becomes relevant.

Best Wishes!
