The Complete Manicure Process: Steps and What to Expect

During a manicure, a technician typically performs the following steps:

* Sanitizing: The technician will sanitize their hands and the client's hands to prevent the spread of bacteria.

* Nail Polish Removal: If the client has existing nail polish, the technician will remove it using nail polish remover.

* Shaping: The technician will use a nail file to shape the nails according to the client's preference (e.g., square, round, oval, almond, stiletto).

* Cuticle Care: The technician will soften the cuticles with cuticle remover, and then gently push them back with a cuticle pusher. They may also trim any excess cuticle if needed and if the client wants.

* Exfoliation: Some manicures include an exfoliation step using a scrub to remove dead skin cells from the hands and wrists.

* Massage: A hand massage is usually performed to relax the client and improve circulation. Lotion or cream is applied during the massage.

* Base Coat: A base coat is applied to protect the natural nail and provide a smooth surface for the nail polish.

* Nail Polish Application: Two or more coats of nail polish are applied in the client's desired color.

* Top Coat: A top coat is applied to seal the nail polish, add shine, and help prevent chipping.

* Drying: The nails are dried using a fan or quick-drying product.

* Cuticle Oil: Cuticle oil is applied to moisturize the cuticles and surrounding skin.
