Pedicures and Ingrown Toenails: Risks and Recommendations

It's generally not recommended to get a pedicure if you have an ingrown toenail.

Here's why:

* Risk of infection: An ingrown toenail is already a potential source of infection. A pedicure, especially if the tools are not properly sterilized, could increase the risk of infection.

* Pain and discomfort: A pedicure can be painful if you have an ingrown toenail, and it may even worsen the condition.

* Potential for damage: A pedicure can accidentally damage the inflamed tissue around the ingrown nail, leading to further pain and complications.

What to do instead:

* See a podiatrist: A podiatrist can diagnose the ingrown toenail, assess its severity, and provide appropriate treatment. They may use techniques like soaking, trimming, or applying a splint to relieve the ingrown nail.

* Home care: While waiting to see a podiatrist, you can try soaking your foot in warm water and applying a warm compress.

* Avoid DIY treatments: Avoid attempting to treat the ingrown nail yourself, as this can worsen the condition and increase the risk of infection.

Once the ingrown toenail has healed, you can then safely enjoy a pedicure.
