Blackhead Removal & Scalp Itch: Effective Solutions for Teen Skin

Question
Hi. I have 2 questions :)

First, i have blackheads on my nose and ive had them for years.. ive tried bakingsoda/powder (i forget which one right now) and and the peeling strips - NOTHING works. Is there an actual way to get rid of them? A product or another home remedy? I just turned 18, im still in school and live with my parents so theres no way i can pay for some laser thing.. so anything else that could help?

Also, i have a dry spot on my scalp its only one little part and it itches a lot - i had dandruff in the past but now its just a little part. Do you have a suggestion on something that could help? My mom suggested olive oil, but my hair is already really oily so i dont know if thats a good idea

Thanks for taking your time to answer my questions! Brittany

Answer
Dear Brittany~

In response to your first question:

First and foremost, a good twice daily cleansing routine will help.  This will allow you to avoid getting blackheads in the first place. In your case I would suggest you use a daily exfoliating cleanser every evening.  There are many on the market that can be found at any drugstore.  Olay makes a good one, as does Aveeno.  Within a week you should see no more blackheads.

Following are the tips I offer for maintaining clear skin:

1) Diet. Drink 8 eight ounce glasses of water daily to help keep your skin clear.
2) Bacteria.  Proper cleansing with an exfoliating cleanser once daily (evenings) can make a huge difference. Use a non-exfoliating cleanser every morning.
3) Look for non-comedogenic make-up products - they are less likely to cause breakouts. Most brands of make-up are non-comedogenic, which means they won't clog your pores.

In response to your second question:

Have you used a medicated shampoo for your dandruff problem in the past?  I would suggest you do so a couple of times a week inbetween regular shampoos. Your mom's idea of applying olive oil to that area is a good one---a couple of times a week before bed, when you know you're going to shampoo the next morning.

Good luck and best wishes, Brittany!
