Humectants & Dry Climates: Expert Advice for Estheticians

Question
Hello!  I'm starting my aesthetician career in a dry, hot, desert climate. In school we learned that since humectants used in a dry climate draw moisture FROM the skin instead of to the skin, we shouldn't use or recommend them. Can you please elaborate on this? The information on the Internet is conflicting, and I read an article in an upscale beauty magazine and it said nothing about dry climates. I don't want to use something that's actually bad for my clients, but hyaluronic acid is so popular and effective, I don't want to miss out on using it if it's not harmful.
Thank you so much for your time and input
Cheryl

Answer
Hello Cheryl,

This is a very interesting question! I would agree with what you learned in school, except for specific instances. It all depends at which stage of the facial you'd use humectants. But first, as a holistic beauty expert, I would recommend you not to use the chemical butylen glycol, propylen glycol and the likes. On the long run, they're toxic for our health.

Now, you could use hyaluronic acid moisturizers AFTER having gorged your client's skin with a good facial mask full of floral waters and rich plant oils. The skin having been filled up by the mask, will not be dried out by the HA cream. Instead, it will be protected from dehydration. You could also send your clients home with a good floral water for toner and a combination of day cream with HA if you want and plant oil like Wild Musk Rose oil or Jojoba oil or whichever you see fit, as a night treatment. The idea is to help the skin rebalance itself during the night.
Also emphasize the necessity to drink plenty of water and green tea and reduce fruit juices, sodas, alcohol and coffee which dehydrate the body greatly.

I can sense from your question that you really care about your job and doing the best you can for your clients. I don't know where the winds of life will take you, but I feel you will touch and change many lives. So the best of luck on your new adventure and career!
