From Blonde to Burgundy: Can You Dye Hair Dark Red Over Existing Blonde?

At the moment i have my hair shoulder length and it's dyed a golden blonde colour. I want to dye it a dark red so will it have to be stripped of the blonde before it can be dyed red or will the hairdressers just simply apply the red dye over my blonde colour?
