Different Skin Types and Care in General

You would have read about skin type’s scores of times, so let’s not get into all that literature. We’ll discuss the same thing in a little different manner. So, first take a look at the general categorization, the different types of skin.

Normal Skin:

This is the skin type which is very easy to take care of. Every product suits it. But, this is not a very common type of skin you would find. But, people blessed with such skin type are truly lucky.

Dry Skin:

The reason your skin is dry is because of the less amount of sebum production than what is adequate for the skin making it look dry and dull. So, you need to externally fulfill this lack of hydration and moisture in the skin.

Oil-based products and humectant (water-binding ingredients) are necessary in the products you use.

Oily Skin:

Very common and extremely annoying. Often prone to breakouts but not necessarily. But, looks dull very easily. The reason is excess production of sebum. Very few products are available for this skin type and even fewer actually work. Your skin needs water in excess and a little bit of oil too. So, don’t be afraid of oil, girls!!! Light-weight moisturizers and clay-based products are suitable for this skin type. And, do not leave moisturizing just coz you think your skin has enough of it. No, your skin doesn’t have moisture so you need to feed it.

Combination Skin:

One of the most common skin types and a little difficult to handle. There are two things in combination skin type:

  • Your skin can be more oily than dry
  • Your skin can be more dry than oily

So, identify which is the more dominating trait and whatever be the trait, your forehead and nose are always oily so whatever products you use, make sure they are matte enough and moisturizing too. This kind of skin tends to get oilier in summers and humid where as more dry in winters. So, change the skin care routine and products accordingly.

And, then, there is another different skin type which is generally not considered – Mature Skin.

Mature Skin:

Well, aging is one of the skin concerns and when it has full-blown on you, your skin type goes into the advanced state called ‘mature’. As you age, the sebum production decreases, the skin is not able to repair itself and your skin becomes dull, dry and withered looking. This is what we call mature skin. It is not necessary that your skin enters this phase after you are 30. Practically, aging can start at any age from the early 20’s.

What does Mature Skin need? Since it is dry and dehydrated and unable to repair itself, the skin needs to be nourished from the outside as well as inside. So, anti-aging products should be the top most on the list but remember to choose wisely and only those which actually help the skin. And, healthy diet is another key requirement now. You need to take care of your skin more and feed it more. So, your skin care routine goes a drastic change and you will find that your skin is able to absorb more and more products.

Sensitive skin:

This is more a skin condition rather than a skin type. Some skin regardless of whether it is oily, dry or combination – is easily irritated and shows red, dry patches where the skin has started to flake. It is very difficult to use any cosmetic products on this skin.

So, among these different types of skins, what skin type do you have? Now you can go ahead with the right skin products and skin treatment for a healthy skin!
