One of the leading causes of infertility and conception problems in women is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS. It can develop as a reaction to the body producing too much insulin. This can result in women's bodies trying to counteract the insulin by beginning to produce androgens or male hormones. Infertility is one of the many effects that can result from this process which is why getting pregnant with PCOS can be so hard.
There are also other effects which are a result of PCOS. Every woman will respond to PCOS in a different manner, and therefore the symptoms in each woman are not identical. Some of the more common symptoms include: A noticeable increase in hair growth on the back, face or chest areas; thinning head hair; acne; obesity; pain in the pelvic region and obesity. For many women these other symptoms become insignificant when compared with infertility.
PCOS generally interrupts the normal menstrual functions. In the first stages of the cycle the ovaries develop tiny follicles inside of which are the eggs. As the cycle continues, only one follicle will develop fully and it is from this follicle that the egg comes out of during ovulation. This whole process happens in response to a rise on the level of LH, which is a hormone responsible for triggering ovulation. If there is not enough LH, then there will be no ovulation, and women with PCOS usually don't secrete the necessary amounts. What this means is that many of the follicles that usually mature into eggs, turn into cysts instead. When women get ultrasound tests done, it is these cysts which show up. The resemblance of these cysts on the ovaries to a string of pearls has been noted by many. On top of this, the menstrual cycle can become very irregular of cease outright in women with PCOS.
This condition is not always discovered. It is not fixed in stone that all women who have PCOS will not be able to conceive a child, on the contrary there are those who don't have trouble getting pregnant with PCOS and can carry a baby to term. It is thought that of women of childbearing age, around 5 or 10 percent suffer from PCOS.
What are the things which can help those who suffer from PCOS? Some women have had success with simply loosing weight, as this can help to trigger a hormonal rebalance in the body. There are drug treatments available for PCOS, however there is no need to run headlong into a harsh treatment when so many herbal and natural remedies exist for managing PCOS successfully. There are so many drugs available these days, which are given like 'miracle pills' that are dolled out for whatever condition we have. Many of these drugs are put on the market without thorough testing of what long-term and intergenerational effects they may have. This is all despite the fact that there is more and more evidence surfacing that these types of drugs can promote cancer.
A dear friend of mine, Candy (for the purposes of this article) had PCOS in childhood. Candy was only diagnosed after she requested some tests from her doctor, even though she had the condition all the way through her teens. Her biggest worry was that she wasn't going to be able to have a baby in later life, as ever since she had first got her period at thirteen they had been irregular. The tests she got back showed that she had a very severe case of PCOS. She was very concerned, so spoke to a specialist to see if she would be able to have children or not. The so called 'specialist' told her that there was no problem, because she could just take drugs to conceive when she wanted to, despite the fact that these drugs are responsible for multiple births and complications in thousands of women. Needless to say, she is in no hurry to be going back to that 'specialist' for those drugs.
It may help you to know the end of Candy's story - not long after she got some more tests done to see what was going on in her body, and after a good cleanse, and the inclusion of lots of fresh organic fruit and veggies in her diet, the PCOS had shrunk, and in the end disappeared altogether. When the time came, her chances of conception were great.
