Waxes, particularly carnauba wax, provide a glimmering finish to hardwood floors. Unfortunately, many commercial waxes are slippery, leading to a potentially dangerous fall, especially for the elderly. However, you can produce a homemade, non-slip floor wax from readily-available products to keep your floors looking shiny without the threat of a slip-and-fall accident. Handle the chemicals used to make the non-slip floor wax with caution, as they are toxic to children and pets.
Pour 1/2 cup olive oil and 1/2 cup vegetable oil into a plastic bucket.
Slip on a pair of rubber gloves and add 1/2 cup vodka, 1 cup orange shellac and 2 tbsp. acacia to the bucket. Orange shellac is available at hardware stores. Acacia is a gum derived from trees and available at drug stores.
Stir the ingredients together with a wooden stirring stick.
Dip a rag into the mixture and work it into a 1-foot section of wood floor in overlapping circles.
Buff the wax with a separate clean cloth. This will remove any excess wax and shine the floor.
Continue to work the mixture into the floor, then buffing it in 1-foot sections.
