Protect Your Hardwood Floors: Are Latex Rugs a Safe Choice?

Porous hardwood floors may expand and contract when exposed to changes in humidity and temperature. They also easily sustain damage from normal household activities. Place felt pads under furniture legs and take your shoes off at the door.

Function

  • Rugs and mats are an important part of hardwood floor care. They protect floors from dirt and sand that can scratch the finish, as well as liquids that may warp or swell the wood. Place rugs in high traffic areas and entryways, as well as under sinks or stoves where water or food spills may damage the floor.

Considerations

  • Do not use rubber, latex or other non-ventilated rugs on wood floors, advises the World Floor Covering Association. These rugs don't breathe, so moisture may condense underneath and cause damage that you can't see. Some latex rugs have a tightly woven backing with a cross-hatch pattern. This pattern may etch itself onto hardwood floors, causing permanent damage.

Solutions

  • Buy cotton, sisal or wool rugs instead, or use synthetic rugs without a rubber or latex backing. Wash or clean the rugs regularly so dirt and sand doesn't sift down to the floor where it can scratch the surface. Protect the rugs and floors with a rug pad. Most rug pads are made from synthetic materials, but they are very thin and have ventilation holes, making them safe for wood floors.
