Easy Hot Water Bath Canning: A Step-by-Step Guide to Preserving Tomatoes

  • Place sterilized jars in large pot. Fill pot with water so that jars are completely covered. Drop corresponding number of canning lids in the pot. Place lid on pot and heat water to boiling.

  • Wash and chop tomatoes removing stems. Place chopped tomatoes in medium size pot and bring to a gentle boil.

  • Using the tongs carefully remove canning jar and using ladle fill jar with chopped tomato. Leave a 1/4" headspace. Wipe jar rim with clean cloth and place lid and ring on jar. Repeat until all jars are filled.

  • Place filled jars back in large pot and cover with lid. Heat to boiling. Boil for 10 minutes. Remove jars carefully from pot and allow to cool. Check that jars are properly sealed by pressing down on the center of each lid. There should be no movement.
