Space restrictions and other physical limitations can make accessorizing a small bathroom challenging. Small bathrooms--anything with an area under 20 square feet--often have just a shower stall or bathtub. You can add color and style conveniently and cost-effectively through a fresh coat of paint, decorative towel sets and shower curtains, knickknacks and other items. Start by picking a theme and then decide how to define it.
Get professional advice. Many interior decorating specialists offer free consultation even if you do not decide to use their services. While professional designers won't give you a step-by-step guide free of charge, they will be able to make helpful recommendations.
Plan a theme for the bathroom. Consider paint color for walls; the design for the towels, washcloths and shower curtain; the type of wastebasket; and any other decorations you will use.
Paint the walls. Paint can spatter and damage any new items you have purchased, so do your painting before adding adding any items to the bathroom. Paint the walls a color that matches the chosen theme. Opt out of this step if you’ve recently painted your walls and like the present color.
Start with simple items such as towel sets and the shower curtain. Look for towels and washcloths that come in a set or at least complement each other. The shower curtain should utilize the same colors but it doesn't need to be an identical style.
Add small, themed knickknacks. If the bathroom has an ocean theme, petite dolphin figurines or a miniature aquarium would be a good accompaniment to the remainder of the bathroom decor.
Finish the design with additions such as the bath mat, soap dish or any other small items that match the bathroom's new theme.
