Fondant is a sugar-based icing used to decorate cakes and other baked goods. Fondant comes in a ready-made form or can be bought in a mix to prepare as needed. Prepared fondant rolls out into a sheet, which is pliable and has a dough-like consistency. Fondant is easily cut into shapes or molded into designs, and it drapes easily over a cakes for a unique frosting option.
Coat the surface of your work area lightly with the powdered sugar or corn starch and dust your rolling pin. Using the rolling pin, roll the fondant to a 1/8-inch thickness, or the thickness desired for your cake-decorating project.
Choose the shapes of the fondant cutouts you would like to make. Press the cookie cutters straight down into the fondant, ensuring that they cut all the way through. Cut out all of the shapes you desire.
Lift the fondant cutouts with the spatula and place aside. Store the cutouts in an airtight container if not intended for immediate use.
