Cookie cutters turn cookie making into a fun project. They come in many shapes and sizes and are usually constructed of metal (copper, tin-plated steel or tin) or plastic. Metal cookie cutters sometimes rust, especially if left in water for too long, or stored in a moist place. Always wash your cookie cutters right after using them and dry them thoroughly before you put them away.
Purchase the correct cleaning product for the type of metal your cookie cutters are made of. For copper, purchase a cleaner made specifically made for cleaning copper, and if cleaning tin-plated steel or tin, purchase an oxygenated rust remover.
Pour the cleaning solution into a small pan. Put on rubber gloves and then take each cookie cutter and carefully place it in the cleaning solution. Position the cookie cutters so they are not touching each other if possible. Let them soak for at least 10 minutes, or according to the product directions.
Remove each cookie cutter from the cleaning solution while still wearing the rubber gloves. Carefully place each one on a paper towel to drain.
Rinse each cookie cutter under the faucet to remove all traces of the cleaning solution. The cookie cutters must be washed thoroughly before they are used again. This step may also be performed using a dishwasher.
Dry the cookie cutters thoroughly with a clean, dry dishtowel and store them in a dry place. Store the cookie cutters out of the reach of small children because the edges can be sharp.
